Some sets take weeks to build. This one? Found it, walked in, and knew it was perfect.

For Eddie and The Getaway’s “WASTED” video, they wanted raw, gritty, real. No smoke machines or studio sets. Just a cold, echoey building in Nashville that looked like it had stories of its own. I was brought in to capture BTS, and from the jump, I could tell this was gonna be a fun project.

The Rise of Eddie and the Getaway

Eddie and the Getaway quickly made a name for themselves in Nashville with their authentic lyrics and raw sound, hallmarks of grunge rock. Formed in the early 2010's, the band gained attention for their electrifying performances and engaging songs. Their lyrics often explore themes of disillusionment and youthful rebellion, connecting deeply with a broad audience.

The band's influences are diverse, pulling from classic rock icons like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, as well as modern indie sensations such as Dinosaur Jr. and J. Roddy Walston & The Business. "Wasted" reflects this combination, featuring gritty guitar riffs and stirring lyrics that resonate with many listeners. In fact, since its release, the song has accumulated over 100,000 streams on various platforms, highlighting their growing popularity.

Their success is not solely due to their music but also their strategic approach to releasing singles and captivating live performances. This approach culminated in the powerful visual experience of their latest music video shoot.

Collaborating with Chris Rippy

Working with Chris Rippy was a fun experience. Known for capturing artists and band's energy, Chris’s dedication to his craft is obvious. He has collaborated with over 30 artists, solidifying his reputation as one of Nashville's most sought-after videographers.

During the shoot, Chris fostered a relaxed environment, enabling each band member's individual personality to shine through. His use of angles and locations effectively showcased both the band's dynamic and the emotional depth of their lyrics..

Chris’s approach to videography reflects a profound understanding of music. He skillfully manipulates lighting, colors, with different cameras and editing to evoke the grunge aesthetic—dark, moody, and flowing with raw emotion. This style not only helps the video but also complements the viewer experience of "Wasted," allowing fans to feel the power of the song more in depth.

The Set Design

Stepping onto the TV set for the video shoot felt transformative. It was designed to echo the early 2000s grunge scene, with an eclectic mix of rundown elements and intentional disarray. The interplay of dirt floors, cobwebs, and the dim yet vibrant lighting created an atmosphere that fit perfectly with the song..

Every detail, from the distressed furniture to the props, were carefully curated to immerse viewers into a world reflecting dreams and reality, a recurring theme in Eddie and the Getaway's lyrics. These props included vintage amplifiers and classic guitars, adding depth to the visuals.

As the band performed against the backdrop of this simple but beautifully raw set, it was obvious how key the environment was in showcasing the emotions tied to "Wasted." The combination of striking visuals and powerful lyrics encapsulated a time when music served as a voice for those who felt unheard.

The Grunge Rock Vibe

The music video for "Wasted" embodies the core of grunge rock, a genre known for its raw and gritty sound, paired with a casual but edgy style. This aesthetic resonates deeply with audiences, particularly those who experienced the 2000s. Think loose flannel shirts, worn jeans, and a laid-back attitude.

Musically, Eddie and the Getaway draws from classic grunge influences while crafting a sound that feels contemporary. The blend of heavy guitar riffs, robust drum beats, and emotive vocals creates anthemic tracks like "Wasted," making the song appealing to both long-time fans and new listeners alike.

The music video pays tribute to the legends who paved the way for grunge while also positioning Eddie and the Getaway in today's music landscape. This balance distinguishes their work. Their video serves as a bridge between past and present, celebrating an era that continues to resonate and inspire many musicians today.

The collaboration with Chris Rippy on the music video for "Wasted" was more than just a filming session. It was a deep dive into creativity, nostalgia, and the unyielding power of music. The combination of Eddie and the Getaway’s talent and Chris's vision has created a video that is likely to resonate with both old and new audiences.

As Eddie and the Getaway carve out their place in the Nashville music scene, projects like this highlight their ability to connect and inspire. The energy on set and commitment to authenticity shine through in every frame, illustrating why this band is one to watch.

With their ascent in the music world, they not only offer a refreshing sound but also remind us of the lasting charm of grunge rock. "Wasted" captures the spirit of an era while boldly moving forward, ensuring the essence of grunge music continues to flourish in the modern landscape.
